MARY CATHERINE AHANEKU MEAL PROGRAM(MCAMP)

ECAF recently launched the Mary Catherine Ahaneku Meal Program in honor of our late matriarch, Ugoeze Mary Catherine Ahaneku, in response to the prevailing economic situation in the country which has deepened poverty in our communities, of which Sacred Heart School is a part. As a result, many children come to school hungry, a condition which our mother was famous for addressing – feeding the hungry! We believe that maintaining that legacy at this particular point in time is our responsibility; a call for action! This program which is in it’s pilot stage, is presently providing meals once a week to the school children. Provision of once-a-week meal for Sacred Heart School children may seem small, but serves a great need and is sustainable. It is our hope that as more funds and other resources become available, the program will be able to serve more meals, more frequently. The generosity of friends and family of ECAF have made this program come to fruition.

The Foundation’s  first project began in 2017 with Sacred Heart School. Sacred Heart School was established over sixty years ago by Catholic Missionaries and His Royal Highness, Eze Cyprian Ahaneku, late traditional ruler of Ifakala Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli  in Imo State, Nigeria. The school was decimated by a storm in 2016.

Sacred Heart School was hit by a major storm in the community on May 4, 2016. Its strong winds ripped the roof off the building and damaged windows and doors. A second storm hit the school again causing more damage to the already damaged buildings. Following these unfortunate events teachers and pupils have been holding classes in a make-shift part of an adjacent church under construction. ECAF has committed to rebuilding the school jointly with the community by raising money and provision of necessary educational materials.

Rebuilding of Sacred Heart School

ECAF started raising money in 2017 in a joint effort with Nkalu community to rebuild the damaged school. Funds are being raised through direct appeals to friends of ECAF, shredding events and appeals to corporate and institutional organizations for funds and educational resources.
